Chris Woodruff's Flint Coney Island Sauce
By Chris Woodruff
Tweet
October 10, 2011 —
Whether you’re at the ballpark, outdoor picnic or home, what’s one of the all-time classic foods? The all-American hot dog of course! But we aren’t talking about just any ordinary hot dog. We’re talking about a quarter-pound hot dog, loaded with the best homemade chili you’ve ever tasted that just oozes down your arm with each bite! Chris Woodruff, co-host of Deep Fried Bytes and a Microsoft MVP, shares one of his favorite hometown classic recipes: the classic all-American hot dog sauce.
This recipe immediately caught my attention. What could be better than adding ground hot dogs to your chili that will in turn go directly on your hot dog? Talk about flavor. Pure genius!
Cooking tip: Don’t skimp on the hot dog brand. The final chili taste will directly reflect the flavors of the dogs. And while you can finely chop the hot dogs (if you have the patience), it is much easier and quicker to put them in your food processor and pulse them several times to a fine consistency.
Enjoy!
Flint Coney Island Sauce
3 lbs ground beef
10 hot dogs (ground)
1 cup water
4 tsp chili powder
3 tsp cumin
2 tsp garlic powder or salt
1 tsp salt
2 tsp onion salt
Combine all ingredients and simmer for 2 hours. Load up your hot dog and enjoy!
I suggest also using hot dogs with natural casing. That is how we do Coney dogs in Michigan.
