Cloud, mobile development take center stage at Innovate 2012

IBM's new collaborative software development and security solutions for cloud and mobile technologies were among the items attendees were exposed to this week at IBM’s Innovate 2012 event, which ended today at Walt Disney World’s Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando.
On Monday, IBM announced a new version of its integrated software Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM) solution that has extended design management capabilities for cloud delivery, development and operations. IBM’s CLM solution is built on the company’s Jazz open development platform, and it brings together IBM Rational Requirements Composer, IBM Rational Team Concert, and IBM Rational Quality Manager in one easy-to-install and easy-to-use solution.
The new CLM software, according to a company statement, ensures that software design is integrated with the rest of the software application development life cycle. Ashok Reddy, director of offering strategy and delivery at IBM Rational, said that the IBM Rational CLM software will be made available as a service.
“One of the things we announced...is that we’re going to offer this Software-as-a-Service on a per-user, per-month basis later this year,” he said in an interview with SD Times. “We didn’t have this Software-as-a-Service model before. Customers who had wanted to use our offerings on the cloud had to purchase the software as usual and use it on the cloud. Now they can actually purchase it as part of the Software-as-a-Service offering from IBM.”
Also on Monday, IBM announced its offering for continuous software delivery in the cloud, which targets agile development teams. According to a company statement, agile developers can now “access the cloud-based trial (beta), powered by IBM SmartCloud Application Services. With minimal management, they can quickly develop and test applications in a secure cloud environment.” Developers can also download the Virtual Pattern Kit for Developers to leverage or extend IBM patterns locally on their own system.
IBM on Tuesday announced a new version of its IBM Security AppScan software that can help organizations develop mobile applications that are more secure by design, according to a statement. As companies embrace the growing Bring Your Own Device trend (where employees’ personal devices are granted access to company materials), the need to secure the applications that run on these devices is becoming more critical. By using this software, the statement said, developers can build security into the initial design of mobile applications so that vulnerabilities will be detected early in the development process.
The new version of IBM Security AppScan will be available this quarter.
IBM Innovate 2012 featured approximately 400 technical sessions in 27 tracks, including streams that showcased a variety of disciplines and solutions for application life-cycle management; design, development, test and deployment; embedded systems and software; portfolio management and enterprise architecture; security; and smarter computing with enterprise modernization.
