Appcelerator brings cloud services to mobile applications

April 17, 2012 —  Software development tool provider Appcelerator today has released Appcelerator Cloud Services (ACS), designed to enable developers to easily add cloud services to their mobile applications.

Nolan Wright, CTO of Appcelerator, said ACS is based on the Cocoafish technology that Appcelerator acquired in February.

“Appcelerator built APIs geared toward the most common mobile use cases,” Wright said, including check-ins, social integrations, photo uploads and data storage. ACS, he said, will automatically scale these APIs within the applications based on usage. Pricing is based on a freemium model, which depends on how much the application uses ACS, he said.

Developers using Titanium’s IDE will have access to ACS’ cloud services within the tool, but Wright said Appcelerator is also offering an SDK, so developers using other tools, such as PhoneGap and Sencha, can use these JavaScript-based APIs within ACS as well.

The Mobile Web development support within Appcelerator’s Titanium environment allows developers to create applications or parts of applications that run within a mobile browser. Hybrid support is also available for developers who want to include native integrations for Android and iOS applications.
