Zend Server beta lays out code tracing capabilities

October 22, 2009 —  Zend Technologies has introduced a beta of Zend Server 5.0 that has code tracing capabilities, which the company says will allow PHP developers to pinpoint problems more easily. The beta was released on Tuesday.

Zend Server 5.0 documents the execution of PHP applications through code instrumentation. The instrumentation is designed for production environments and has a negligible impact on performance, said CEO Andi Gutmans.

Developers can choose between having code tracing be always on, or triggered by performance monitoring. Zend Server provides analytics and data visualizations for code tracing.

That information makes it easier to reproduce errors, said Gutmans. "In many cases, reproducing a problem is problematic. Reproducing a credit card transaction could result in charging someone twice."

Zend intends to provide more analytics and visualizations over time, and it will also do more around aggregating information across instances of an application, Gutmans added.

Other features found in the beta include job queuing and support for PHP 5.3. Job queuing is intended to increase the performance of applications by improving response time through offloading bookkeeping requests from the end user, as well as through performing tasks asynchronously or at recurring intervals, Gutmans explained.

PHP 5.3 was released in July. Despite being designated as a point release, it adds major functionality to the language, Gutmans said. The update added namespaces support, more closures (also known as anonymous functions), and increased garbage collection.

The final edition of Zend Server 5.0 will be available before the end of the year, and pricing will remain consistent with the current release. It is available for Linux, Windows and now IBM i.
