OutSystems releases free version of agile platform

August 25, 2009 —  Agile platform provider OutSystems has released a free community edition of its platform focused on the .NET environment, the company announced.

Released yesterday, this version has the same features and running code as the commercial editions, but it is limited to five concurrent uses of deployed applications and 75,000 “software units”—described by marketing vice president Mike Jones as 60 database tables and 150 pages.

“We had a free version in the past, then went to a trial version, but developers didn’t like it because they knew the next call they’d get was from a sales person, or the trial period would expire before they could even finish anything useful,” Jones said. With the new release, OutSystems is hoping to develop a community of users around the product.

The platform itself encompasses a development environment, the ability to integrate with other tools, and a built-in deployment mechanism for configuration management, as well as a management console that can be used to provision additional servers for load balancing and for the generation of analytics, Jones said.

OutSystems’ Agile Platform also comes with scoping and sizing tools for project management, as well as what Jones called “embedded change management,” which allows users to submit feedback about a running, deployed application.

Additionally, OutSystems worked on the out-of-the-box experience and to improve the installation within .NET environments, Jones said. He added that the platform includes a “getting started” guide and sample applications, such as one created for video collection management.
